Closure of Matfield Store

Matfield's village shop and post office - the InnStore - closed down at the end of March.

The store was originally opened in April 2010 following the closure of the original Matfield Post Office (in Cherry Trees opposite the butchers) which itself followed on from the closure of the old Central Stores several years earlier.

Cutting the Ribbon

It was formally opened on Thursday 8th April 2010 by Heidi Nicklaus who played Kathy Perks in "The Archers".

The original aim had been to open a community store, staffed by volunteers. A small team led by Parish Councillors took on the project, identifying potential sites and, after distributing questionnaires throughout the village, demonstrating overwhelming support for a new shop.

Subsequently, Kay and Graham Vamplew, the then landlords of The Star inn, decided that they could convert a building behind their pub to a shop which could be run on a commercial basis and would incorporate a new Post Office. When the Vanplews gave up their tenancy of The Star a few years later, the InnStore was in danger of closing down. It was rescued by the Knight family of Matfield and continued to trade until March this year.

Some of the crowd at the opening

At this point, the webmaster has no information on whether there is any possibility of the shop reopening again. But Hammond's butchers - the only remaining retail shop in the village - is thriving, selling meat, vegetables, cheeses and other delicatessen items.
